It's a 6¾ mile, waymarked, circular walk with several points of interest along the way, starting in the historical town of Totnes and walking via Totnes Riverside Station, Fishchowter’s Lane and Totnes Hydropower Scheme. It should take the average walker 3 to 4 hours to complete the walk, but if time is limited there are options to shorten the walk by ¾ mile, 2¾ miles or 4 miles. Take a look at our map and guide to the Franklin Trail Or use the OS Explorer map  You can find out more about Totnes Ramblers on their blog www.visittotnes.co.uk website.

John Musgrave Heritage Trail

The John Musgrave Heritage Trail can be walked in 4 sections. The entire walk is 35 miles with walks from Maidencombe to Cockington, Cockington to Totnes, Totnes to Dittisham, Dittisham to Greenway by Ferry and then Greenway to Brixham. The route from Cockington to Totnes is 9.5 miles and Totnes to Dittisham is 9 miles. Walking from Cockington to Totnes, start at Cockington Court within Cockington Estate in Torquay, a pretty little historical village with thatched pub, cafes and arts & crafts on site. The walk will lead you through woodland and fields but does include some main roads as well. There will be plenty of chances to stop along the way including at the beautiful Occombe Farm, a local working farm with well-stocked cafe, and at Marldon village with its fine church, local shop and pub. History buffs may embrace the chance to visit Berry Pomeroy castle (when open) and animal lovers should enjoy the Mare and Foal Sanctuary and cafe (seasonal). This part of the walk ends at Totnes Bridge near The Plains. The route from Totnes to Dittisham is a moderate walk along the River Dart which runs through the pretty villages of Cornworthy, Tuckenhay and Ashprington. For more details about the rest of the walk and full guided instructions please visit the www.southdevonramblers.com website.
