Family Forage Days at Sharpham Estate

Event Date:

26th October

Overview

Come and enjoy the wild abundance of the Sharpham Estate with your children. We will discover what the season has to offer and pick some wild plants to take back to our sheltered outdoor kitchen for a fun cook up.

We’ll talk about which ones we can eat and will take the ones we need back to the woodland kitchen for a cook-up and simple wild food lunch.

We will learn a little about fire and get the woodland fire lit where we can then relax in the warmth with herby bread and a warm drink and final questions.

This day is for you if you are:

interested in learning more about the natural world

Listening Club: Liam Byrne & Sara Mohr-Pietsch

Dartington Music Summer School & Festival presents a new series of Listening Clubs: intimate evenings exploring the art of listening through conversation and live music. Aimed at demystifying classical music and the concert experience, each event will introduce a musician appearing at our 2020 Festival. Join Artistic Director Sara Mohr-Pietsch as she launches the series with Liam Byrne, who will perform old and new work on the Renaissance viola da gamba, and discuss his practice of listening deeply to the music and secrets of the past. Liam Byrne spends most of his time playing either very old or very new music on the viola da gamba. An obsession with the instrument’s most obscure 16th and 17th century repertoire is a recurring theme in his work, whether in devising baroque performance installations for the Victoria & Albert museum, or in collaboration with the Appalachian fiddler Cleek Schrey, or creating new electronic works with Icelandic composer Valgeir Sigurðsson. Over the years, Liam has worked closely with a wide variety of musicians, from Damon Albarn to Emma Kirkby, and is a frequent guest of new music ensembles Stargaze, the London Contemporary Orchestra, and Crash Ensemble. With a background in Historical Performance and degrees from Indiana and Oxford Universities, Liam has played and recorded with many of Europe’s leading Early Music ensembles, including the Huelgas Ensemble, Dunedin Consort, The Sixteen, i Fagiolini, and the viol consorts Phantasm, Concordia, and most notably Fretwork, with whom he toured and recorded extensively for several years.

Continuum: A celebration of Bach

Some glorious music from the composer described in his day as 'the Miracle of Leipzig', From violin sonatas with basso continuo to solos for each instrument, this wide-ranging programme includes the great Sonata in A major for violin and keyboard, the beautiful G major Basso Continuo Sonata, and a highlight from The Art of Fugue. TEMS is delighted to be bringing flautist Liz Walker and Continuum  back to Totnes after a nine year gap. Advance tickets £13 (under 18s £5) available from the  Dartington Box Office (01803 847070) and website (boxoffice@dartington.org), on the door £14/£5. For more see totnesearlymusic.org.uk.
