Hauschka – Volker Bertelmann

The sonic landscapes created by German pianist/composer Volker Bertelmann — better known as Hauschka — sound like the work of a whole ensemble, so it is an astonishing sight to see just one lone figure onstage. Hauschka achieves these otherworldly effects through careful curation of a prepared piano, employing everything from ping pong balls to aluminium foil. His latest release, What If, is an irrepressible outpouring of creativity that reinvents piano music in a dramatic and exceptional fashion.

Alongside regularly sharing his virtuosic one man performances around the world, his work as a soundtrack composer has seen him working on scores for a number of documentaries and feature films, not least James Franco’s adaptation of John Steinbeck’s In Dubious Battle and, alongside Dustin O’Halloran’s Lion for which he was nominated for an Oscar and a Golden Globe.
