The Teign Shanty & Maritime Festival is a FREE, family friendly event.
This year there will be at least 27 sets of shanty singing groups attending, coming from all over the UK as well as overseas. Also performing are Teignmouth’s very own Sea Shanty singing group, the Back Beach Boyz.
The 2018 festival was a huge success, filling the towns of Teignmouth and Shaldon with crowds of supporters, raising the profile of Shanties and the River Teign community, as well as raising £2,000 for charity.
Workshops where people can learn more about the origins of shanties. This year we are also including a maritime experiences theme with: Maritime Figurehead Carver, Knot Tyers, Wooden Boat Builder, Canvas Sailmaker, Traditional Flag Maker, Willow Lobster/Crab Pot Weaver, the Icelandic Adventures of Pike Ward, the Jurassic Coast Poet-in-Residence and a Maritime Storyteller.
Displays at Staverton open from 10.30am both days, close 5pm on Saturday and 4.30pm on Sunday. There is loads and loads going on and this an absolute must for children of all ages and anyone who appreciates fine modelling and model engineering. It’s a great day out too.
The main exhibition will be focused at Staverton Works (approx. 5 minute walk from our station at Staverton) across 3 rooms featuring a variety of model railway layouts as well as static and powered models from local clubs and exhibitors. There will be signs guiding visitors to/from the station & exhibition hall via the riverside walk, those with mobility issues will be guided via New Lane which has step free access.
At Totnes, there will be the usual display of railway models in the ‘Monster’ as well as in the marquee on the station lawn. This year, there will also be a layout in one of our coaches – go by train to see model trains in a train!
This site will boast the miniature aspect of the event, encompassing the excellent miniature and garden railways as well as various miniature traction engines roaming the site. There will be a marquee placed in the Station Field which will house the Plymouth model boat club and others.
