Window Wonderland Totnes

With the dark nights drawing in and during this uncertain time there is going to be an illuminated, magical, whole-town walking trail, to be explored and enjoyed this Halloween organised by Totnes Carnival Committee. WHAT IS WINDOW WANDERLAND? Window Wanderland is an uplifting, family-friendly event, where residents, businesses, groups and schools can create a display for their window, door or garden forming an illuminated walking trail. These individual windows across the town will transform our streets into dazzling galleries and the beauty of Totnes’s unique community spirit will be showcased and ablaze for all to see. WHEN IS IT? Totnes first ever Window Wanderland will brighten the evenings of Saturday 31st October and Sunday 1st November between the hours of 6pm – 9pm. Or you can put your displays up in the run up to the 31st. HOW TO GET INVOLVED It’s really easy to do. You can take part by either making a display or simply by coming out on the trail and seeing Totnes in a whole new light. No matter how small or large your street facing window, door or garden, let’s brighten up TOTNES with this unique and wonderful feel-good festival. Anyone can take part, regardless of age and almost anything can count as a display: from a string of fairy lights to a band playing in your front room. As long as it's family friendly, anything goes! No fancy lights needed, just a normal room light or lamp will bring your display to life. The theme is Halloween so let your creative juices shine. PARTICPATE  Let’s set Totnes alight together. We’ve all had such a surreal few months and the carnival had to be cancelled so we thought this is a way to bring our community together and bring light to the darkness in these times.  No matter what is happening in the world, Wanderlands are self-contained and Covid-safe. Window Wanderland is a free event and everyone in Totnes is welcome to be part of the trail.  You can make a display in the window of your home, business, school, nursery, shop, car, campervan, boat, pub, front door or even your garden. Your display can be as simple as a string of lights, an open book with a lamp, tissue and card silhouettes or you can totally push the limits and create an installation piece, live performance or living art.  Set your imagination alight.  Click here to see some window ideas here. All the displays are put on to a map for people to follow and local businesses, residents, groups and schools are encouraged to get involved. Once you’ve decided to take part, then simply register your display and this will create a map for the trail on Saturday 31st October from 6-9 pm. Click here to register here. Slip Sliding Away with Dylan Bowen

During this course, students will have the opportunity to create and decorate work using a range of handbuilding and slip decorating techniques. The emphasis will be on simplicity, on a loose and dynamic approach to earthenware, and on leaving things alone, loosening up and developing through making. The four days will be divided into ‘making’ and ‘decorating’ days. Dylan will introduce simple techniques everyday as starting points for the days work, and the students will have then be able to take these methods and adapt and develop them in their own directions. We will use old and new methods with clay and slip to focus on the making process rather than concentrating on the finished pieces. We will explore different making processes, handbuilding, carving, slicing and cutting the clay. We will use slip trailers, brushes, sgraffitto: any techniques that are there to be used. Suitable for all abilities. Food and drink On this course, lunch will be provided on Tuesday-Friday. These communal meals are a vital part of the learning experience and we strongly recommend you attend them. Tea and coffee will be available throughout the course. A Talk with Mark Gatiss

You can join us in socially-distanced seating in the Great Hall for this event, or watch along online (look for the appropriate option at checkout). Registration will close and online talk ticket holders will receive a link to join the talk 24 hours before the event start time. What makes a good ghost story? Find out on this thrilling evening with the man who describes himself on social media as ‘actor, writer, strangler, Mark Gatiss. The bond between Christmas and the spooky – perhaps most embodied by the Charles Dickens classic, A Christmas Carol – is the staple of many much-loved stories. In this talk, Mark will share his own and his favourite tales as he reads from ghost stories looking at the contrast between jollity and terror; the invitation of a spectre to the feast; the tracing of the anxiety within the festivity. Mark has been writing ghoulish tales since his childhood, and is best known for his acting and writing credits on The Vesuvius Club, the BBC’s Sherlock and Dracula adaptations, and The League of Gentlemen.
